How a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting intersects a handlebody

چکیده
In [Topology Appl. 90 (1998) 135] Scharleman showed that a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting surface Q of a 3-manifold M can, under reasonable side conditions, intersect a ball or a solid torus in M in only a few possible ways. Here we extend those results to describe how Q can intersect a handlebody inM . 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Handlebody-preserving Finite Group Actions on Haken Manifolds with Heegaard Genus Two
Let M be a closed orientable 3-manifold of Heegaard genus two with a non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and G be a finite group of orientation-preserving smooth actions on M which preserves each handlebody of Heegaard splitting and each piece of the JSJ-decomposition of M . We will call some specific conditions of the Heegaard splitting and the JSJ-tori the condition A, . . . , and the condition F. ...

We show that under reasonable conditions, the spines of the handlebodies of a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting will intersect a closed ball in a graph which is isotopic into the boundary of the ball. This is in some sense a generalization of the results by Scharlemann on how a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting surface can intersect a ball. AMS Classification 57M27; 57Q10
متن کاملLocal Detection of Strongly Irreducible Heegaard Splittings via Knot Exteriors
Let T be a compressible torus in an irreducible 3-manifold M other than S. It is easy to see that either : 1. T bounds a solid torus, or: 2. T bounds a submanifold homeomorphic to the exterior of a non-trivial knot in S, where the compressing disk for T is a meridian disk of the knot. The intersection of a strongly irreducible Heegaard surface with solid tori was analyzed by Y.Moriah and H.Rubi...

Let (V1, V2; F ) be the Heegaard splitting and ∪Ti be the union of the JSJ-tori. In this article, we prove that G ∼= Z2 or D2 i...
متن کاملLocal detection of strongly irreducible Heegaard splittings
Let S be a Heegaard splitting surface of a compact orientable 3-manifold M. If S is strongly irreducible, the manner in which it can intersect a ball or a solid torus in M is very constrained and the allowable configurations are simple and useful. Splitting surfaces not conforming to these simple local pictures must be weakly reducible.
